Dr. Aafia Siddiqui Case

Aug, 2008: Aafia Siddiqi disappearance in 2003 and then re-appearance in the custody of US is a blatant violation of human rights.

ANAA joins the community in asking for justice for Ms Siddiqui. We would like to see the case investigated by UN sanctioned body and then tried in International court that will have the confidence of all parties involved.

BBC reports, Aafia Siddiqui is the youngest of three children of a British-trained doctor.

Her brother is an architect based in Houston, while Fauzia is a neurologist who used to work at Mount Sinai hospital in New York.

Aafia Siddiqui went to school in Karachi and graduated with a biology degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in the US.

In 2004 then-FBI director Robert Mueller announced at a press conference that Aafia Siddiqui was wanted for questioning.

She was later named as part of an alleged al-Qaeda diamond smuggling operation in Liberia.

Publications such as Newsweek quoted the FBI as saying this was to finance al-Qaeda's biological and chemical weapons programme.

This is an absolute disgusting display of violations of the most basic human rights by the U.S. Dr. Aafia disappeared in 2003 with her children. She has said to be held in Afghanistan in U.S. custody where she was tortured and raped repeatedly. She was never charged. Only AFTER a journalist broke her story a month ago, did the U.S. admit they had her and had arrested her in Afghanistan. She is 90 lbs and sickly. The U.S. then illegally extradited her accusing her of playing commando with a large rifle trying to kill armed American men during interrogation. Ridiculous! And now she hasn't been given medical attention the whole week she was in the U.S. for her gun shot wound she received (they probably just shot her when making up that unbelievable story) during the alleged incident in Afghanistan. It appears the U.S. gov't just wants her to die off so she doesn't spill their dirty secrets. This is a travesty of justice. The U.S. is undermining its own democratic values of due process, habeas corpus, and "innocent until proven guilty." All peoples should stand against this blatant injustice. No one else will respect U.S. preaching about human rights and democracy when it doesn't even apply it to itself!
